Chiaroscuro | a selected group exhibition
AVA GALLERY & ART CENTER - LEBANON, NH
The definition of the Italian word Chiaroscuro, in art, “is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used by artists and art historians for the use of contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modelling three-dimensional objects and figures.” Chiaroscuro may also be employed to illustrate meaning/content or narrative metaphor within a work of art. Submissions articulate chiaroscuro in the traditional sense, depicting light and shadow, as well as examples in the allegorical sense which seek to convey a deeper message.
